cute.Guy on a bike in new york high fives people hailing cabs…
This was my idea!!I drove the moving truck into New York five years ago, my parents trailing me in their Honda from Jersey City to the Upper East Side. When we arrived in front of my new apartment, my father bounded up to me, “Everyone is so friendly here! All I saw were people waving at me all the way up the street! Also, something’s going on up in the sky — couldn’t see what it was but people all over the street were pointing at it.”*
*(This is my father’s sense of humor… in case you miss it.) Also, when they came to visit me a few months later, my father greeted everyone on the street, “Good morning!” He startled a number of folks, I can tell you. My dad grew up outside Chicago (and we lived there until the mid-80s) and people actually talk to strangers on the street. I know, crazy. But I went back last week to visit my grandmother in Geneva, IL, and I tell you, we greeted EVERYONE on the street. EVERYONE. Yes, this would be exhausting in New York (which, I’m going to pretend, is why it’s not done) but… well… It’s nice. It’s kind of like that pleasantry you share with your doorman except it’s with everyone.
I miss my Midwestern roots.
